I grew up in Brooklyn, where migrating birds meant pigeons visiting from New Jersey. I have no patience for standing around and staring at branches, trying to see something I'm not going to be able to identify.

ArticlesI'll do pretty much anything for a good assignment -- or a bad one that pays really well: Take off my clothes; get slathered with German goat butter and wrapped in plastic; eat grasshoppers, ants, and grubs....I do have my specialties and preferences: travel, especially in the Southwest U.S., Mexico, and countries where camels like to live; food and spirits; art and architecture; spas; or any combination thereof. But I'm also a research junkie; when an unfamiliar destination or topic comes my way, the thrill of the chase kicks in.
